Review: Younger Siblings- Bald Eagle Aren’t Actually Bald 7”

It’s awesome when a band is a reminder of the first music you were ever obsessive about. I’m talking about the music when you first discovered what music even was. For me, it was a compilation CD that ESPN put out of song you hear at sporting events called Jock Jams and a tape of They Might Be Giant’s album Flood

Besides Will Smith’s “Getting Jiggy With It” and Chumbawumba’s “Tubthumping,” I can’t remember any other songs from Jock Jams, that’s probably a good thing. On the other hand, Flood is still very near and dear to my heart. I don’t know why I grew so attached to it as a kid. It was probably partly the fact that I stole the tape from my cousin who was in high school at the time and partly the goofy, odd-ball nature of TMBG.

Quite coincidentally while I was going through a rediscovery of They Might Be Giants, I came across the Birmingham, AL band Younger Siblings. Their 7” Bald Eagles Aren’t Actually Bald was perfect timing for the mood I was in musically. The three songs on the 7” are super well constructed, solid pop songs that reminded me why I snuck into my cousins room to take the Flood tape away from her.

My two favorite songs from Bald Eagles, have to be “I Don’t Know Anything” and “This One Time, A Kid Asked Me To Pose Naked In His Movie.” Both of the songs instantly grabbed me with their use of quirky, jangle-y pop and story-telling songwriting.

From the self-deprecating, “I Don’t Know Anything,” to the to the airing of personal insecurities in “This One Time…” the songwriting in Bald Eagles is one of the most rewarding qualities.

The Bald Eagles Aren’t Actually Bald 7” is not only a nostalgic trip, but also a wonderful listen. It’s exciting that this is only the beginning for Younger Siblings.
